SHIELD Issue #1 Jonathan Hickman Dustin Weaver Books

I don't often review comics though I read more than my share. Occasionally, however, there comes along something that really grabs my fancy. More often than not, it is a book about which I am the last to board the train, like Fables. Then there are those rare cases where a book comes along that I want to push on fellow fans of the form.

With S.H.I.E.L.D. Architects of Forever, Hickman demonstrates why I so love the Marvel and DC Universes (a feud in which I refuse to engage), with all of the byzantine baggy histories which both have amassed through the decades, often to their editors' discomfort but to a talented writer's delight. Some may get bogged down wondering how this book will integrate into Marvel's "continuity," (I suspect it largely won't) but for me, I just delighted in Hickman's inventive blending of historical persona (Galileo, Tesla, Newton, Leonardo, etc) with Marvel stalwarts (Celestials, Galactus, the Brood) and with a few favorite characters' fathers thrown in for good measure. Weaver's art is lovely and unusual, proving a fine compliment for Hickman's story.

As someone who now reads comics only when collected in volumes, I can't wait for the next volume of Hickman's SHIELD. I can't remember the last comic I so much enjoyed.

SHIELD Issue #1 Jonathan Hickman Dustin Weaver Books Reviews

Fantastic history, fantastic drawing! Jonathan Hickman is one of the best writers of these days. He has made a real solid tale of the SHIELD with this comic book. Although it reminds me something like The League of the Extraordinary Gentlemen, it has its new elements. This is a must read; a real Masterpiece.
This is simply the best comic I have read this year. Hickman spins a yarn that spans centuries and it is awesome! The greatest minds to ever live play a part in this story and it leaves you wanting more. Epic!
Whoa this was a fun read with great artwork. I hope MARVEL puts the next series in Trade Paperback soon.
I just received my copy of SHIELD Architects of Forever last night and I read it in about a hour. Simply put, it's the best graphic novel I have read in a long time. The mix of historical figures and comic book tropes makes for an exciting ride. I love the idea of a secret history for on of the Marvel Universe's premiere organizations.

I teach Creative Writing to 7th graders in Watts, Ca and my students went crazy for it. Without naming names, there is one student in my class who, let's be honest, is a bit of a playful hell raiser, but he is passionate about history, especially the Renaissance Period. I had issue one on my bookshelf and he asked me to order the graphic novel. I did (mostly for me) and he'll read it this week.

I am a strong advocate for comics in the classroom. It increases engagement and helps student develop reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Pick this book up. You won't regret it! 'Nuff said.
Great retcon history folding historical Renaissance figures into the Marvel Universe.

Teaming Nikola Tesla with Howard Stark & Nathaniel Richards is more interesting than I'd have expected.

Now if the story had been a complete one rather than the start of a saga, I'd be happy to give this 5 stars; the fact that the 2nd volume is more than a year delayed is the 2nd frustration, but one hopes it'll be worth the wait.
I'm a big Hickman fan boy but this is a masterpiece and that's saying something if you have read anything Hickman has done. And the art, the art is some of the best I've seen. I got lost in the books first pages with just the art alone. This is must read for any comic fan
A fantastic look at Shield through the ages. Jonathan Hickman is one of the best writers in comics these days. This book is a great example of it, his use of historical figures as part of the Shield program is amazing. The story is a very engaging one, the art is fantastic, the only negative thing I have to say about this book, is that it end on a cliffhanger, that has yet to be resolved. Hopefully we'll get volume 2 soon. One more thing, Hickman's work at Marvel all seems to be connected, as I found out while reading his latest Avengers/New Avengers run. Just get this book and make it part of your collection, specially if you are a fan of Jonathan Hickman!
