Earth is full. Now, when there's a new ordinary thing, it doesn't have anywhere to go. A plague of blankets, chairs, and other horrors unleashes itself upon the picture-book realm. Warning content is fearsome.
"O.O
that is a very creepy children's book.
O.O" - C.E. Murphy, author of the Walker Papers series, The Negotiator
Trilogy, and the Inheritor's Cycle.
Invasion eBook Jenna Katerin Moran Elizabeth Sherry
A poet friend of mine used, as her highest compliment, "It adds to the available stock of reality." Boy does INVASION do that. There isn't anything else quite like it. The hilarious internet remix, MY LITTLE GOLDEN BOOK ABOUT ZOGG, is in the neighborhood, but INVASION strikes some overtones all its own.Amusingly, "the stock of reality" is itself the plot's threat. And any of us who have ever watched pets furiously savaging a stray sock and wondered, "what on earth are they THINKING?" will find the early scene where our picturebook heroes, Puppy, Kitten and Lamby destroy a blanket, delightfully plausible. "How cute!" I thought. Then as I kept reading, the story became much more than cute.
Moran has perfect control of tone throughout the story, which is impressive, because it's one thing to master the diction and rhythms of preschooler picture books, but quite another to do that in a story about that genre *breaking down*. The dialog is by turns sweet, bittersweet, hilarious and desperate.
And the art! Elizabeth Sherry is fully Moran's equal, managing the visual tone brilliantly. She gives you classic Golden-Bookish Puppy, Kitten and Lamby frolicking; she gives you Puppy, Kitten and Lamby attacking blankets and lamps like they would if that sort of thing *happened* in Little Golden Books - and then she gives you Agent Chick holding a revolver in one cybernetic hand of her mechanical harness. She also knows just when to layer in photographic effects. The picture of the four Animal Friends jumping off the exploding shopping cart is worth your $3.99 all by itself.
INVASION is *about stuff*, yes, like a deconstruction of horror tropes and the remorseless encroachment of the adult world on the world of childhood. But before it's those things, it is its own mad, beautiful self. All of our stocks of reality just got bigger because of it.

Invasion eBook Jenna Katerin Moran Elizabeth Sherry Reviews
An illustrated picture book about a world gone terribly, terribly wrong. The colors and the art style are different from Edward Gorey, but the creepy-cute factor is the same. It is also comparable to the Blair Witch Project. Be wary of the savagery and innocence of your own spaces.
It does look best on color e-readers (but is enjoyable on b&w), and perhaps one day there will be a slip-jacketed hardcover edition. One can hope.
I discovered this disturbing work after the tragic loss of Jim Henley, one of the reviewers of this title who perished while attempting to download a non-existent kindle version of "How to Avoid Huge Ships". His glowing review of this misleading picture book provides a merely tempting keyhole glimpse of a troubling story that opens a sea of questions while offering but a Dixie cup full of answers. First question for me, Where was Chick while the other protagonists were frolicking? What was the actual "smell" that the blanket had that so disturbed Puppy? Was the blanket made of wool? Even then, why would Lamb instinctively want to kill it??? Most of all, how did our heroes "know" that the Earth is "full"? The story is baffling, and as the adventure unfolds and night envelops the world, the adorable creatures find themselves in a terror so complete, and reach a conclusion so mysterious and incredible, I will have real trouble getting to sleep tonight. AMAZON SHOULD NOT MAKE BOOKS LIKE THIS ONE SO EASY TO DOWNLOAD.
This is a great, entertaining read that starts off putting a smile on your face and then quickly becomes much more memorable. It has quite the cast of characters, and the content of the book (both written and visual) does an excellent job of transitioning between two very different styles. Two thumbs up!
While INVASION is short, it is well worth the price tag. The writing and art are both amazing. The story is centered around a children's book world, populated by Puppy, Kitten, Lamb and Agent Chick, and its invasion by mundane objects. The setting, writing, and art styles appeal to nostalgia, while the horror elements blend with that to produce a fantastic finished product.
What might seem at first to be a normal, if especially lovely children's picture book soon reveals itself to be something altogether haunting and strange. The wonderful illustrations belie a story that, even in its brevity, is at turns horrific, idyllic, dreamlike and nightmarish. A must for fans of Gorey, Carroll, Shaun Tam, and anyone who understands that a "child's" story can be the perfect medium for something fascinating and disturbing.
I wanted to say, "A Quick, Creepy Picture Book," but maybe "creepy" isn't the right word? Hell is empty, and all the devils are here. I mean to say, Earth is full, and all the ordinary things are in the world of picture books. What are a kitten, puppy and lamb to do? Can the cybernetic Agent Chick save the day? An excellent picture book if you like things that are a bit strange.
I like to leave this out on my coffee table to delight and disturb adult visitors, though I put it away if any imaginative children who are too young for its existential terrors are planning to visit. This is a small and slim picture book for grownups and older children, filled with beauty and horror. I started loving Gorey around age ten, and I think it would be age-appropriate for any child already into Gorey or similar curiously disturbing tales.
The art complements the writing very well, and while this is a fairly small book it's big enough to do the art justice. I wouldn't mind it being even more lavishly bound with a larger layout, but the small size of this makes it more tempting for guests, which means more people get to read it.
