The Great Funeral Oration on Abraham Lincoln / Emma Hardinge 9781454430032 Books
The Great Funeral Oration on Abraham Lincoln is an exemplar of the almost immediate apotheosis of Abraham Lincoln. Delivered to a grieving audience of over 3,000 at the Cooper Institute in New York City on Easter Sunday 1865, Hardinge's oration attempts to make sense of the tragedy. In so doing she strikes upon themes that have a remarkable familiarity: Lincoln as a Christ-like figure, ardent foe of slavery (and yet, "just as firm in his defense of that State-right sovereignty"), a modern Moses to those he freed, "incarnate spirit of true republicanism, the self-made boy, the unimpeachable youth, the noble man, the legislator, statesman, orator, chief magistrate, and father of a mighty people, their staff in the earthquake's shock, their anchor in the storm," an "HONEST MAN." Hardinge's oration was considered so important that even though it was delivered extemporaneously, it had been phonographically reported and was published due to great demand by those who were not there to hear it. It has aged well and remains worth reading.Product details
